Look at this picture I just found...Its Dec 30th 2006, my wifes at work and it's
New Years Eve ( she works as a Marketing assistant in a Casino) I'm by myself
tonite and I Just decided to do a little research on the Cigar Box Fiddle. It's
something I started around Christmas. I stumbled across this photo online a few
days ago in a Louisiana library. I have to admit when I first saw this photo It was
so entrancing that I staired at it for at least 30 minuets in silence ...I’m not sure
where my mind went. This was such a powerfull image for me to see...AS sad
as it is to see someone in such great poverty, I was astonished buy human
perseverance and the overwhelming love for music that all people have. A person
had to have an EXTREME desire to want to feel the emotion that music
produced on the psyche to build an instrument in this fashion (or anything in this
simplistic form for that matter.) Also, for someone to be that creative and
determined. In reality, this photo by histories standards ain’t that old- and Believe
me, even at that time when this photo was taken there were cheap violins that
could be bought. Look in the back ground, there's a window curtain! That ain't
exactly stone-age decor. Anyhow, Its obvious to say this guy was not just poor,
but very poor. Yet, look how vast and rich his spirit was ...If I’m not mistaken...
And I'm not- That’s a twig and string as a bow!!!!! It don’t get no more primitive
than that....That’s the Love of Music had by ALL!!!!
Well, anyhow these things always inspire me to take an introspective into myself
and what I want from my craft and direction of my guitar building...and Also what
I want from life, be it money, happyness....Health and longevity, perhaps all of
them, I look forward to the New Year 2007. This is going to be the begining of an
Interesting section I’m going to work on in my website.. Check back often
because I want to find as much history and photos I can about this subject..
Now, I'm gona be honest I have no plans on building any kind of fiddle or know
anything of them, So don’t expect to see me start making them…But I still find it
interesting and hope you do too, so check back soon………. John....Happy New
Year 2007!!!!
